According to ‘EVERY NEWBORN - An Action Plan to End Preventable Deaths’, a study led by WHO & UNICEF and ‘India Newborn Action Plan (INAP)’ by Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, states, that India accounts for highest number of Neonatal deaths globally. In addition, five women die every hour during childbirth, making it a country with high Maternal Mortality too.
Interestingly, Infections due to unclean and unhygienic delivery practices accounts for one major reason for both Newborn and Maternal Mortality. Further, 40% neonatal deaths take place during labor and the day of birth. 73% deaths occur in the first week, the first 24 hours accounts to 37% deaths. In case of Maternal Mortality 37% deaths are due to Post-Partum Hemorrhage (PPH). (Source WHO, UNICEF)
The recommended guidelines by these eminent bodies, suggests inclusion of essential newborn care (hygiene, thermal control, support for breastfeeding) , most importantly, infection prevention and its management. Disposables personal protective have also been recommended for infection control in healthcare facilities.
Today, holistic Healthcare with a special emphasis on Newborn and Mother care is one of the prime focus areas of the Government. National Health Rural Mission (NRHM) is an outcome of this agenda. Many welfare schemes like Janani Suraksha Yojna (JSK), Janani Shishu Surakha Jojna (JSSK) and many such schemes are being launched to ensure that benefits reaches the ground level, so that issue of Mortality can be addressed.
